MY LIFE WITHOUT IFS

When I was about fourteen years old, if I hadn't suffered from a near-fateful high fever, I could have enjoyed a happy life.

In 1975, if the Communist North Vietnamese army hadn't invaded and seized my beloved country, I wouldn't have been imprisoned in cold, hunger and hard labor for nearly six years. And millions of boat people wouldn't have looked for freedom by risking their lives in high seas. And tens of thousands of them wouldn't have fallen prey to violent storms and Thai pirates.

In 1976, if the Communist government hadn't carried out the heartless capitalist class eradication campaign, my family wouldn't have lost a lot of assets, including real estate, construction machinery, workshops, etc. and all businesses in building, banking, shipping, etc... My family wouldn't have lived in extreme dire circumstances.

After being released in 1981, had I had three taels of gold, I would have left my country (clandestinely) by sea, and I could have built again a new life in a Western country.

Before ending the letter, I entreat God grant me serenity so I could tolerate my misfortunes. Amen.

 Học tiếng Anh bằng thành ngữ

Hôm rồi, tôi thấy câu sau đây trong sách: "the lowlanders who were MORE AT A LOSS in the jungle."

Be at a loss (không biết làm cái gì). Ví dụ: I was at a loss for what to do next. I was at a loss to know to resolve it. I am at a loss to know what to wear.

Nhưng nay có thêm chữ "more" rất khó dịch nên tôi cầu cứu tự điển Reverso và họ cho hai ví dụ sau, xem hình. (Tự điển Reverso là tự điển song ngữ nổi tiếng thế giới).

Tạm dịch

Ví dụ thứ 1: Thưa ông Chủ tịch, tôi ko thể xấu hổ hơn.

Ví dụ 2: Thực tế, những người lập thỉnh nguyện chỉ ra rằng những người cao tuổi thông thường gặp khó khăn hơn khi đối diện với kỹ thuật voice mail.

Nhận xét: qua hai ví dụ trên, ta thấy dịch từ tiếng Anh ra Pháp vẫn dễ hơn từ tiếng Anh ra Việt vì hai ngôn ngữ Anh và Pháp đã từng "sống chung" cả ngàn năm.
